DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 66389-02 is a shock absorber spring rated at 155 N/mm, 273 mm long with a 55 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.
Key Features
- Progressively wound
- Öhlins part number 66389-02
- Inner diameter 55 mm
- Free length 273 mm

Manufacture and Tolerance
Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate.
The Numbers That Matter
Dimensionally this is a 55 mm × 273 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 155 N/mm.
Choosing 155 N/mm
Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
What the Rear Spring Decides
Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise.
Applications
There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.
What Fitting Involves
Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
Fitting and Setup Service
This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
