Manufacture and Tolerance
Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one.

Choosing 14 N/mm
A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
What the Rear Spring Decides
The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does.
Applications
This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate.
Installation
The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque.
Road Approval
Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
