How Öhlins Makes Them
Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later.

Choosing 130 N/mm
This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
How a Rear Spring Works
Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks.

Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate.
Fitting
Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
