Manufacture and Tolerance
Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get.

Where This Rate Belongs
A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Rate and the Linkage
Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks.
Applications
This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight.
Installation
Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
