DescriptionThe whole story▼
Shims 8/20/0.25, Öhlins part number 00187-20. Revalving means changing the stack, not the piston — that is why shims are sold singly.
Key Features
- Öhlins part number 00187-20
- Outer Diameter 20 mm
- Inner Diameter 8 mm
- Thickness 0.25 mm
- Original Öhlins service part
What It Is
Dimensionally this is 8 mm, 20 mm, 0.25 mm, which is how it is told apart from the rest of the range. A shim is a thin, ground steel washer, and the stack of them is what generates damping. Two shims of the same thickness but different diameter give completely different damping. Öhlins stamps and grinds its shims to tolerances a general-purpose washer never holds.
Genuine Service Part
Öhlins keeps service parts available for units long after they leave the current price list. This is an original Öhlins part, not an aftermarket equivalent — the tolerances are the ones the unit was assembled to. Öhlins parts are unit-specific: a close dimension is not a substitute. For a full rebuild, the seal kit plus the wear parts is usually the sensible order.
Identifying the Right Part
Order under 00187-20. Where several sizes share a description, only the number separates them. Öhlins states inner diameter 8 mm, outer diameter 20 mm, thickness 0.25 mm for this number, and those figures are the deciding ones. Shims are reused only if they are undamaged and flat; a coned shim is finished. Two shims of the same thickness but different diameter give completely different curves.
Fitting and Setup Service
If you would rather not open the damper yourself, we can do it — we are an authorised Öhlins service centre and rebuild these units as a matter of routine.
