DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 08779-95 is a pair of fork springs rated at 9.5 N/mm, 243 mm long with a 38 mm inner diameter. Spring rate is the single largest variable in how a front end behaves, and it is the one thing no damping adjuster can compensate for.
Key Features
- Measured spring rate 9.5 N/mm
- Inner diameter 38 mm
- Supplied as a pair
- Free length 243 mm
- Öhlins part number 08779-95
- 140 mm of usable stroke
- Straight-wound, constant rate
Manufacture and Tolerance
Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later.
The Numbers That Matter
Dimensionally this is a 38 mm × 243 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 9.5 N/mm.
What This Rate Does
If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Applications
The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight.
What Fitting Involves
Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in.
Road Approval
Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.
Fitting and Setup Service
Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
