Why the Rate Holds
Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one.

A mid rate balances support under braking against compliance over the surface, which is why it is the usual starting point. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits.
What Fitting Involves
Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg.
Road Approval
