DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 08724-90 is a pair of fork springs rated at 9.0 N/mm, 267 mm long with a 36 mm inner diameter. Too stiff and the front loses feel over bumps; too soft and it dives under the brakes. Rate sets that balance.
Key Features
- Free length 267 mm
- 140 mm of usable stroke
- Inner diameter 36 mm
- Öhlins part number 08724-90
- Measured spring rate 9.0 N/mm
- Supplied as a pair
- Tapered-wound, constant rate
Why the Rate Holds
The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list.
The Numbers That Matter
At 267 mm free length and 36 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.
What This Rate Does
This is the middle of Öhlins' range — the rate most riders of average weight end up on once sag is set properly. If you are unsure and close to average weight in full kit, this is the sensible starting point. A mid rate balances support under braking against compliance over the surface, which is why it is the usual starting point. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Applications
Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate.
Fitting
Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
