Manufacture and Tolerance
Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly.

Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?
What Fitting Involves
Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
