DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 08436-60 is a pair of fork springs rated at 6.0 N/mm, 452 mm long with a 43 mm inner diameter. Under braking a soft spring lets the fork run through its stroke and the geometry with it.
Key Features
- Tapered-wound, constant rate
- 260 mm of usable stroke
- Supplied as a pair
- Öhlins part number 08436-60
- Measured spring rate 6.0 N/mm
- Inner diameter 43 mm
- Free length 452 mm
Manufacture and Tolerance
Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted.
Dimensions
Öhlins holds the free length at 452 mm and the inner diameter at 43 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.
Where This Rate Belongs
Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. Comfort and grip come from the spring moving early; this is the end of the range where that happens. The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Applications
Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?
Fitting
Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart.
Road Approval
Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.
Fitting and Setup Service
We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
