How Öhlins Makes Them
Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships.
Size and Rate
The 46 mm bore and 60 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 50 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
Choosing 50 N/mm
Very firm rates keep the chassis attitude stable when the brakes are used at their limit, at the cost of ride comfort. This is the stiff end of Öhlins' catalogue, chosen when fork dive rather than grip is the limiting factor. Track use with sustained heavy braking is the typical reason to go this far. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Applications
Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same.
Fitting
Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct.
Road Approval
