Why the Rate Holds
Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later.

What This Rate Does

Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Fitting
Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
