DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 02428-47 is a pair of fork springs rated at 4.7 N/mm, 467 mm long with a 43.6 mm inner diameter. Getting the rate right restores the static sag the chassis was designed around.
Key Features
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Supplied as a pair
- 301 mm of usable stroke
- Öhlins part number 02428-47
- Free length 467 mm
- Inner diameter 43.6 mm
- Measured spring rate 4.7 N/mm
Manufacture and Tolerance
The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.
The Numbers That Matter
At 467 mm free length and 43.6 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.
Choosing 4.7 N/mm
Rates at this end are for long travel, light riders, or machines that need the wheel to follow the ground rather than skip over it. A very soft rate uses more of the stroke, which is usually what an off-road chassis wants. If the bike rides high and feels harsh over small stuff, the rate is often the reason rather than the damping. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Applications
Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork.
Fitting
Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload.
Road Approval
Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
