DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 02428-41 is a pair of fork springs rated at 4.1 N/mm, 467 mm long with a 43.6 mm inner diameter. A fork that is sprung wrong uses up its travel before the damping has a chance to work.
Key Features
- Öhlins part number 02428-41
- 308 mm of usable stroke
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Measured spring rate 4.1 N/mm
- Supplied as a pair
- Free length 467 mm
- Inner diameter 43.6 mm
Why the Rate Holds
Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.
The Numbers That Matter
Öhlins holds the free length at 467 mm and the inner diameter at 43.6 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.
Choosing 4.1 N/mm
A rate this low belongs on a long-travel machine or under a light rider — it lets the fork use its full stroke instead of riding high and skating over the surface. Rates at this end are for long travel, light riders, or machines that need the wheel to follow the ground rather than skip over it. At this rate the fork sits deep in its travel under load, which is exactly what a long-travel chassis is designed around. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Applications
Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers.
Installation
Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
