Why the Rate Holds
Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against.

Where This Rate Belongs
Rates at this end are for long travel, light riders, or machines that need the wheel to follow the ground rather than skip over it. If the bike rides high and feels harsh over small stuff, the rate is often the reason rather than the damping. At this rate the fork sits deep in its travel under load, which is exactly what a long-travel chassis is designed around. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Applications
If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.
Fitting
A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque.
Road Approval
Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
