Why the Rate Holds
Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips.

Where This Rate Belongs
At this rate the fork sits deep in its travel under load, which is exactly what a long-travel chassis is designed around. Soft rates like this are what off-road and adventure forks need: the wheel has to follow the ground, not deflect off it. Öhlins goes this soft only where the linkage ratio or the rider weight genuinely calls for it. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Applications
Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.
Fitting
A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
