Manufacture and Tolerance
The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made.

Choosing 13.0 N/mm
Very firm rates keep the chassis attitude stable when the brakes are used at their limit, at the cost of ride comfort. Very firm rates keep the geometry stable but ask the damping to work harder over small inputs. Track use with sustained heavy braking is the typical reason to go this far. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate.
Installation
Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification.
Road Approval
Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.
