DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 04744-13 is a pair of fork springs rated at 13.0 N/mm, 260 mm long with a 25.5 mm inner diameter. Too stiff and the front loses feel over bumps; too soft and it dives under the brakes. Rate sets that balance.
Key Features
- Inner diameter 25.5 mm
- Öhlins part number 04744-13
- Supplied as a pair
- Free length 260 mm
- Measured spring rate 13.0 N/mm
Manufacture and Tolerance
The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes.
The Numbers That Matter
Dimensionally this is a 25.5 mm × 260 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 13.0 N/mm.
Choosing 13.0 N/mm
Track use with sustained heavy braking is the typical reason to go this far. This is the stiff end of the catalogue — chosen when collapse under load, not grip, is the limit. Öhlins offers rates this high only where the application genuinely needs them. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
Applications
Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits.
Installation
Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
