How Öhlins Makes Them
Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one.

Choosing 11.5 N/mm
This is the stiff end of Öhlins' catalogue, chosen when fork dive rather than grip is the limiting factor. Heavy riders in full kit, or machines carrying substantial load, are the other case. Very firm rates keep the geometry stable but ask the damping to work harder over small inputs. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Applications
If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?
Fitting
Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed.
Road Approval
Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.
