DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 68004-10 is a pair of fork springs rated at 10.0 N/mm, 300 mm long with a 35.3 mm inner diameter. Too stiff and the front loses feel over bumps; too soft and it dives under the brakes. Rate sets that balance.
Key Features
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- 140 mm of usable stroke
- Öhlins part number 68004-10
- Supplied as a pair
- Inner diameter 35.3 mm
- Free length 300 mm
- Measured spring rate 10.0 N/mm
Why the Rate Holds
Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly.
The Numbers That Matter
Öhlins holds the free length at 300 mm and the inner diameter at 35.3 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.
What This Rate Does
A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
Applications
Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.
What Fitting Involves
Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
