DescriptionThe whole story▼
The YZF-R7, built since 2021, has become one of the more common starting points for riders moving up into club racing and national 300/400-style supersport classes, partly because it is light enough to be forgiving and cheap enough to crash without ending a season. Once a YZF-R7 goes racing, the steering lock stops being a detail: an unlimited steering angle lets the bars flop hard against the tank or fairing in a fall, and race classes commonly require it to be restricted. Melotti Racing's steering limiter for the YZF-R7 is machined from solid aluminium alloy and bolts in to set that limit without the trial-and-error of balance weights.
Key Features
- Steering limiter machined from solid aluminium alloy for the YZF-R7
- Sets a fixed, reduced steering angle for racing use
- Removes the need for the classic balance weights used to limit lock
- Melotti part LS.YA.7212, a single component
- Suited to club racing and entry-level supersport classes on the YZF-R7
- Fits the YZF-R7 built from 2021 onward
Construction and Material Quality
Melotti Racing machines the LS.YA.7212 from a solid billet of aluminium alloy rather than casting or stamping it, which lets it hold a tighter, more repeatable stop angle than a pressed part would. The idea behind a steering limiter is simple: race regulations frequently cap how far the bars can turn, both to limit the violence of a tank-slapper and to stop the forks and bars thrashing around after a crash. Melotti Racing builds this one specifically to bolt onto the YZF-R7's steering stem area, in place of fiddling with the stacked weights some riders still use to achieve the same restriction.
A Starting Point for Race-Class Riders
For riders stepping up from a licence course onto a grid for the first time, the YZF-R7 is often chosen precisely because its parts list, Melotti Racing's included, is short and specific rather than overwhelming. A steering limiter is usually one of the first items on a scrutineering checklist, alongside catch tanks and lockwiring, so fitting a purpose-built part rather than improvising with weights saves an argument with race officials before the first session. It is a small, inexpensive item next to a fairing kit or a set of clip-ons, but it is one most series will not let a YZF-R7 race without.
Fitment and Compatibility
Melotti Racing lists the LS.YA.7212 for the YZF-R7 from 2021 onward. The same bike also takes Melotti's quick-change front fender support kit and side-mount steering damper kit, so riders fitting a limiter at the same time as a damper conversion can order all three together.
Road Approval
No type approval or test certificate is on file for this steering limiter. Melotti Racing sells it for racetrack and closed-circuit use, and fitting it to a YZF-R7 ridden on public roads in Germany without separate registration is not permitted; at race meetings the organiser's rules decide what is required.
