DescriptionThe whole story▼
Red gives the Leatt Neck Brace 5.5 a bold, racy look, and the brace underneath has the protection credentials to match. Leatt builds the Red 5.5 around a reinforced polyamide matrix platform and a CoreFlex rear strut that is split to move with your spine and designed to snap away under extreme load rather than injure your back.
It is the same 5.5 that Leatt pitches as its all-rounder for motocross, enduro and trail: from 600 g, S/M and L/XL, adjustable three ways, with a flat push-button closure and an emergency release.
Key Features
- Red reinforced polyamide frame
- CoreFlex rear thoracic strut, split and breakaway
- Collarbone cut-outs and optimised helmet rim platform
- Three-way SureFit plus four rear angle wedges
- Push-button closure, emergency release
- From 600 g, in S/M and L/XL
- Compatible with Leatt Brace-On body armour
- CE certified, Regulation (EU) 2016/425
How the Red 5.5 protects
A neck brace does its work in the fraction of a second when the head is thrown forward, back or sideways. The red 5.5 gives the helmet rim a defined platform to meet and then spreads the energy into the shoulders, chest and back, which can carry far more load than the cervical spine. Collarbone cut-outs make sure that platform does not turn the helmet edge into a lever on the collarbone.
Leatt states that, in an independent moto study by Action Sports EMS, riders with a brace saw up to 89% fewer critical cervical spine injuries, and collarbone injuries fell by up to 45%. This is Leatt's figure, reported as the manufacturer's claim. Formally, the brace is CE tested and certified as personal protective equipment under Regulation (EU) 2016/425.
CoreFlex and the frame
The back of the brace is where the CoreFlex design comes in. The rear thoracic strut is split and contains nylon (10% of the brace's material), so it flexes with you as you ride and breaks away under extreme pressure before it can cause a back injury. The main frame is 85% reinforced polyamide, and the remaining 5% is polyurethane foam in the injected padding, which Leatt describes as durable and easy to clean.
Adjustment
The red brace uses SureFit sliders at front and rear for three-way adjustment, and Leatt's manual adds four interchangeable wedges that set the angle of the rear strut. There is no cm sizing table from Leatt; instead the fit is checked on you. Wearing your helmet and protector, the brace should lie on both shoulders without tipping, and when you look up, your helmet rim should come down close to the brace rather than the brace pushing the helmet up. Choose S/M or L/XL by build, and contact us if the fit is in doubt.
Daily handling
A low-profile push-button opens and closes the Red 5.5, so it stays flat under your jersey. In an emergency, the manual's emergency open screw allows the brace to be removed. With a Leatt chest or body protector that has Brace-On pads, the brace rests on those pads.
Service life
Clean the frame and padding with soap and water alone. Leatt's manual says a brace that has been in a crash must be replaced, and frequent riders should change it every two years. The 5.5 ships in plastic-free packaging.
What you should know
- The 89% / 45% figures are Leatt's, not an independent test by us.
- Fit is judged on the rider; Leatt publishes no cm size chart.
- No XXL in Red; XXL exists only in Stealth Black/Grey.
- Always wear with a full-face helmet; it does not replace riding skill.
Colour
Red is the statement colour of the 5.5 range. It ties in with red bikes and red-accented kit and looks fast even standing in the van. Dark mud and roost marks are clearly visible on red, so a rinse after wet rides keeps the colour looking as strong as on day one.
