DescriptionThe whole story▼
Orange is the colour you spot first on a crowded mini track, and that is the point of this version of the Leatt Neck Brace 1.5 Mini. Parents can pick out their rider from the fence, and other riders see a small child earlier. Underneath the bright finish sits Leatt's smallest brace: a Mini-size shell for the youngest motocross and enduro riders that weighs 450 g.
The Orange 1.5 Mini uses a foam platform instead of a hard composite one, which keeps it soft-edged and forgiving for a first brace. It closes with one front buckle, and a body strap is part of the package.
Key Features
- Orange finish for high visibility on busy tracks
- One size, Mini, for the smallest riders
- 450 g closed-cell EVA foam platform
- Polyamide-reinforced struts on chest and back
- Split release buckle at the front, usable with gloves
- Body strap in the box
- Removable, washable pads
- Sits on Leatt Brace-On pads of most Leatt chest and body protectors
Fit and the front buckle
Children rarely wait patiently while you fiddle with straps, so the Orange Mini has just one closure. The split buckle at the front opens wide enough to slip the brace over the shoulders and then clicks shut. Leatt points out that it can be worked with riding gloves on. Once it is closed, the supplied body strap goes under the arms and anchors the brace to the torso so it stays in place over jumps and whoops.
For this size Leatt publishes no size table in centimetres. The manufacturer's instructions describe a practical check instead: put the helmet on, close the brace and see that it rests evenly on both shoulders, then have the child tilt the head back. The helmet rim should approach the brace without being pushed up by it. If that is hard to judge, we are happy to help.
What the Mini is made of
The shell of the Orange 1.5 Mini is 85% closed-cell EVA foam, a material that stays light and does not take on water from rain or a wash. Ten percent is polyamide, used as an internal reinforcement in the thoracic struts, which are the parts that transfer crash energy from the brace into the chest and upper back. The last 5% is polyester in the padding and straps.
Over the collarbones the shape is cut away, so the edge of the helmet is kept off the bone, while the rim platform on top gives the helmet a surface to land on.
Pairing with a chest protector
If your child already rides with a Leatt chest or body protector, check for Brace-On shoulder pads: most Leatt protectors have them, and the 1.5 Mini is designed to rest on them so the two pieces stack cleanly.
Testing and care
Leatt lists an EU type-examination certificate from RICOTEST (525255002) for the 1.5 Mini, and it carries the CE mark as personal protective equipment under Regulation (EU) 2016/425.
Pull the pads out and wash them; wipe the orange shell with soap and water only. According to Leatt's instructions a brace that has been in a crash is retired, and with frequent use the brace should be replaced after two years, even if your child has not outgrown it by then.
What you should know
- Mini is a very small size; older children need a Junior model instead.
- There is no official centimetre chart, so try it on with the helmet.
- Wear it together with a full-face off-road helmet.
- It lowers the risk of neck injury but is no substitute for training, supervision and suitable riding terrain.
Colour
The bright orange shell is easy to spot when you are searching for your rider in a group of youth bikes. The flip side is that a light, saturated colour shows scuffs and mud stains more than black does, so a quick rinse after each ride keeps it looking fresh. On a child who is often riding in a group, being seen early by others is worth that extra minute with a sponge.
