DescriptionThe whole story▼
The Leatt Z-Frame is the entry point into Leatt's knee braces. An injected composite chassis with aluminium hinge covers provides the rigidity a brace needs, and Leatt designed it to help reduce forces on the knee and the risk of ACL, MCL and meniscus injuries.
Leatt designed it around ease of use: slim hinges for bike feel, a low-profile strap system that is quick to put on, and a shin bone pad that fits inside your boots. Leatt's data sheet describes it as a little less rigid than the C-Frame or X-Frame, with comfort for long rides in mind.

How the brace works
Leatt designed the Z-Frame to help reduce the forces acting on the knee and so the risk of injuries to the ACL, MCL and meniscus. Hyperextension stops can be set at 10°, 15°, 20° or 25° to restrict how far the leg straightens, with ACL injury reduction as the stated aim.
In addition, the knee is CE tested and certified as impact protection to EN 1621-1 Level 1.
Chassis and materials
Leatt uses an injected composite chassis with aluminium hinge covers. According to Leatt's data the brace is made of 50% glass-filled nylon composite, 25% carbon-injected polymer for added stiffness around the knee, 10% aluminium alloy for the hinge caps, 10% EVA foam padding and 5% other components. The aluminium covers add structural strength where the hinges take load.
Getting it on
A brace is only useful if you wear it every ride. The Z-Frame's strap system is low profile, comfortable and easy to fit, which Leatt emphasises for this model. Interchangeable hinge padding sizes let you adjust the fit around your knee, and the low-profile shin bone pad gives a good fit inside your boots.
Bike feel
Slim hinges keep the brace narrow at the knee, giving you direct contact with the bike and enough room inside your pants.
Sizes
Five sizes are available, S, M, L, XL and XXL. Leatt's documents list the Z-Frame as a pair. For a junior rider, Leatt offers the Z-Frame Jr in a dedicated junior size. Packaging is plastic-free.
What you should know
Leatt positions the Z-Frame below the C-Frame and X-Frame; its data sheet describes it as less rigid than those two but more comfortable for long rides. There is no separate gel knee cup listed. A knee brace has to be set up and fitted correctly to work and should be checked after a hard crash. No brace can prevent knee injuries completely.
Colour
The black Z-Frame with its aluminium hinge covers looks purposeful without being flashy. Under dark pants it disappears; under light ones, the black frame shows only as a slim outline at the knee.
