DescriptionThe whole story▼
The Leatt Dual Axis covers more of the leg than a knee pad: a hard shell runs from the knee down over the shin, and both zones are CE certified to EN 1621-1 Level 1. For motocross riders who take roost, footpeg strikes and hard landings, that extra coverage is the point.
What keeps it comfortable is the hinge. Two pivots on each side copy the natural motion of the knee, so the guard follows your leg instead of pushing against it when you stand up on the pegs.
Key Features
- Knee and shin certified to EN 1621-1 Level 1
- Hard shell overlaid on 3DF impact foam
- Dual pivots each side that follow natural knee movement
- Slim shin plate for a good fit inside riding boots
- Large ventilation ports in critical areas
- Leatt protection score of 25 points (manufacturer rating)
- Weight from 850 g per pair (manufacturer)
Protection and certification
Both the knee and the shin section are CE tested and certified as impact protection to EN 1621-1 at Level 1. The hard outer shell spreads and deflects a hit, while the 3DF impact foam underneath absorbs the energy that gets through.
On Leatt's own protection scale the Dual Axis reaches 25 points. Treat it as a manufacturer rating for comparing Leatt guards, not as a CE value.
The dual-pivot hinge
Rigid knee and shin guards often bind when you bend the leg because a single pivot point cannot follow the rolling motion of the knee. The Dual Axis uses two pivots on each side, which Leatt says replicate the knee's natural movement. The result is that the shin plate stays on the shin and the knee cup stays on the knee through the full range of motion.
Materials
According to Leatt's data the guard is 50% polypropylene for the hard shell, 25% polyurethane for the 3DF impact foam, 15% nylon, 5% polyester and 5% other components. Leatt's data sheet also mentions a specific left and right design and a secure strapping system that keeps the guards in place.
Boots and ventilation
The shin plate is slim so it slides into motocross and enduro boots without forcing the boot open. Ventilation ports are placed in critical areas for airflow, which matters with a hard shell that would otherwise trap heat.
Sizes
The Dual Axis comes in S/M, L/XL and XXL. Leatt gives the weight as from 850 g per pair, depending on size. Packaging is plastic-free.
Dual Axis or Dual Axis Pro?
Both guards share EN 1621-1 Level 1 certification for knee and shin and a Leatt score of 25 points. The Pro adds a geared hinge with a metal cover and rubberised inner hinge padding, and Leatt lists it at 740 g per pair against from 850 g for this model. The standard Dual Axis is the simpler design with two plain pivots per side.
What you should know
With a hard shell and hinges, the Dual Axis is bulkier than a soft sleeve guard and weighs more; check that it fits under your pants and into your boots. It is a knee and shin guard, not a knee brace: the pivots follow the knee but do not limit hyperextension and offer no ligament support. It is certified at Level 1.
Colour
The black Dual Axis looks compact for a hard-shell guard, since the dark plates blend together visually. Black also hides the roost marks that a shin plate collects quickly at the front of the leg.
