DescriptionThe whole story▼
The Leatt Body Protector 5.5 Evo sits at the top of Leatt's hard-shell line and is designed for riders who push their limits. Its signature feature is a set of adjustable hard flank panels that wrap the ribs and sides, combined with an extended back plate and Level 2 certification for chest and back.
Despite that coverage, the 5.5 Evo keeps the airflow of FlexMesh Pro. Leatt states that the current version is 19 % lighter and 50 % more ventilated than the previous model, and gives it 24 points on its protection score, the highest figure in this group of Leatt body protectors.
Key Features
- Adjustable hard flank panels for rib and side protection
- Extended back plate
- CE Level 2: chest EN 1621-3, back EN 1621-2
- CE Level 1: shoulders and elbows EN 1621-1
- Hard shell with articulated FlexMesh Pro
- Separate compression suit with front zip
- Removable front and rear plates, slimmer BraceOn™
- ISR rated, FFM certified, 24 points on the Leatt protection score
Coverage on the Sides
The 5.5 Evo puts particular emphasis on the sides of the torso. It uses hard flank panels that you can adjust to your build, so they sit close over the ribs instead of flapping. The extended back plate lengthens spinal coverage, and Leatt describes the combination as great rib and side protection.
Certified Protection
Chest and back are CE-tested and certified at Level 2 under EN 1621-3 and EN 1621-2. The shoulder and elbow guards, integrated in the compression suit, are certified to EN 1621-1 Level 1. The 5.5 Evo is also ISR rated and approved by the French Motorcycle Federation (FFM).
Leatt's protection score of 24 points is a manufacturer rating used to compare its own protectors.
Hard Shell That Moves
The shell is combined with FlexMesh Pro, an articulated structure with flex joints that allow 3D flexing and natural movement. Leatt describes the 5.5 Evo as ventilated protection that keeps you cool, and quotes 50 % more ventilation and 19 % less weight compared with the previous model.
According to the composition supplied by Leatt, the protector consists of 43 % TPU, 30 % high-density polyethylene, 11 % fabric, 11 % cross-linked polyethylene and Lycra, and 5 % other materials. The listed weight is 2.40 kg.
Modular Fit
The hard-shell protector is worn over a separate compression suit with a front zip and integrated shoulder and elbow protection. A height-adjustable kidney belt sets the shell at the right point on your torso. Front and rear plates are removable, and the new, slimmer BraceOn™ system makes the protector compatible with Leatt neck braces.
Leatt offers sizes S, M, L, XL and XXL for heights from 160 to 196 cm.
What you should know
Maximum coverage comes with weight: at 2.40 kg according to Leatt, the 5.5 Evo is the heaviest protector in this group, and the hard flank panels need a moment to adjust properly. If you mainly ride trails and value low weight over side coverage, a lighter model such as the 4.5 Evo or a soft-shell AirFit protector may suit you better. Shoulders and elbows are Level 1.
Colour
The black 5.5 Evo shows red buckles and red accents on the chest plate on Leatt's product images, giving the protector a racier look than an all-black finish. Under a jersey the red disappears, so it works with any colour scheme.
