DescriptionThe whole story▼
In Supersoft Charcoal the Knox Colton is a riding jean you can wear all day without anyone guessing it is protective gear. The men's slim tapered cut, the soft washed charcoal denim and dark alloy-coloured trims look like a well-worn pair of everyday jeans, yet the single-layer construction is certified to EN 17092, Class AA.
Knox built the Colton as its softest jean so far, and the charcoal wash is the version that leans most towards city style.
Key Features
- EN 17092 Class AA from a single layer of denim
- Micro-Lock Compact armour at knees and hips (EN 1621 Level 1)
- Knee armour removable through a hidden zip inside the knee
- Stretch denim: 75% cotton, 13% polyester, 10% nylon, 2% elastane
- Slim leg tapering to the ankle
- Waist sizes 30 to 40 in two leg lengths
- Dark alloy-coloured rivets and button
Comfort First
The selling point Knox stresses for this colour is the supersoft wash. The canvas-type denim is treated so that it does not need a long break-in period, and the stretch content keeps it moving with your knees and hips. Knox also points out that the jeans are made using non-toxic, more eco-friendly textile chemicals from the supplier Rudolf, which replaces some of the harsher treatments common in denim finishing.
How the Protection Works
Instead of a separate aramid lining, the Colton relies on a single layer of abrasion-resistant denim that is certified as a whole to Class AA. Impact protection comes from Knox Micro-Lock Compact pads at hips and knees, rated EN 1621 Level 1. Their low profile is the reason the slim leg still looks slim. The knee pads are reached via an invisible zipped pocket that opens on the inner side of the knee.
Choosing Waist Size and Length
Each size combines a waist measurement in inches with a letter: 30-S, 32-M, 34-L, 36-XL, 38-XXL and 40-3XL. Measure where your trousers normally sit, about two inches below the navel, then take two inches off that figure to get your Knox size. On top of the waist size you choose a leg: Knox gives 33 inches (84 cm) for the regular inside leg and 30 inches (76 cm) for the short one. Riders around 175 cm often find the short version sits cleaner over riding boots.
On and Off the Bike
A slim tapered leg sits neatly over short riding boots or trainers. The high waist mentioned in Knox's product text keeps your lower back covered on a naked bike. Off the bike, the charcoal shade, debossed waistband badge and embroidered back-pocket logo keep the look subtle. The hexagonal Knox key ring on the waistband is a small practical touch for anyone who carries keys on a belt loop.
Care
Take the protectors out, close the zips and machine wash according to the care label. Knox prints an abstract pattern in charcoal tones inside the fly and the armour pockets, which is purely decorative. Dry the jeans flat or on a line rather than in a hot dryer to keep the elastane in good condition.
What You Should Know
The Colton is not waterproof and has no thermal lining, so in cold or wet weather you will want overtrousers or a base layer. Its armour is Level 1; there is no hip-to-knee or tailbone coverage beyond that. Class AA is a solid level for road riding in jeans, but it remains below AAA garments for sport riding.
Colour
Supersoft Charcoal is a washed dark grey rather than black. It looks softer and more casual, shows less fluff and dust than true black, and combines easily with black or grey riding jackets. Light road dust is slightly more visible than on the aged black version, but the grey tone also fades more gracefully over many washes.
