DescriptionThe whole story▼
The Knox Cartmel is a women's motorcycle jean with a high waist and a subtle kick flare – a cut that is rare in protective denim. Knox says it was developed by women for riders who are tired of the same skinny leg in every brand. The jeans are single layer, certified to EN 17092 Class AA and fitted with Micro-Lock Compact armour at knees and hips.
In Aged Black Rust they combine a softly faded black wash with dark antique brass hardware for a vintage edge.
Key Features
- High-waisted kick flare cut designed for women
- Single-layer denim, EN 17092 Class AA
- Micro-Lock Compact knee and hip protectors, EN 1621 Level 1
- Two-way stretch denim with elastane
- Short (28 in) and regular (30 in) inside leg
- Invisible zipped armour pockets, YKK zips throughout
- UK sizes 8 to 20
Why a Kick Flare
The Cartmel stays slim and streamlined down to the ankle and then opens slightly. Knox designed this flare to sit well over a tall motorcycle boot and to balance the silhouette, so the jeans look as good in a café as they do on the bike. The high waist supports the figure and keeps your back covered when you lean towards the bars.
Protection Built Into the Denim
Knox uses an advanced abrasion-resistant denim and certifies a single layer of it to EN 17092 Class AA. Without an aramid liner the jeans stay lighter and more breathable. Micro-Lock Compact protectors at knees and hips are approved to EN 1621 Level 1, and each knee pad sits behind an invisible zip on the inside of the leg for easy removal before washing.
Finding Your Size
Sizes are labelled with the UK dress size and a letter, from 08-XS to 20-3XL. Knox sizes women's jeans by body measurement: measure your natural waist and the fullest point of your hips. As a guide, UK 10 (S) corresponds to a 71 cm waist and 95 cm hips and UK 14 (L) to 81 cm and 105 cm. If you fall between two sizes, Knox advises taking the smaller one; the stretch denim will give a little. The Knox model is 178 cm tall and wears UK 8 (XS).
Short or Regular Leg
The Cartmel is available with two inside leg lengths: 28 inches (about 71 cm) for the short and 30 inches (about 76 cm) for the regular version. Because the flare is meant to fall over the boot, many riders choose the length that just touches the top of the foot when standing barefoot.
Details and Finish
Knox adds an embroidered logo to the back pockets, a circular debossed waistband badge and its hexagon key ring. The hip armour pockets and the fly are lined with an abstract print in charcoal tones. The wash is produced with non-toxic textile chemicals from Rudolf, which Knox uses across its current jeans range.
Riding in the Cartmel
On the bike the two-way stretch denim with elastane gives enough movement for an upright roadster or a retro bike, and the high rise stays put when you reach for the bars. The flare covers the top of a tall boot so no skin shows when your knees are bent, which also keeps draughts out on cooler mornings. Off the bike the Cartmel reads as a fashion jean with heeled ankle boots or trainers, and once you remove the armour it goes into the washing machine like any other pair.
What You Should Know
The Cartmel offers Class AA in a single layer of denim, which is good protection for jeans but not equivalent to a leather or AAA garment. The armour is Level 1, and there is no tailbone pad. The flared hem is designed for wearing over boots; tucking it into boots is not what this cut is made for. The jeans are not water-resistant.
Colour
Aged Black Rust is a black wash with a warm, slightly rusty fade. Knox says it was developed to complement the copper tones in its Seasonless collection, and it looks particularly good with cognac or brown boots. It is more forgiving of dust than jet black, while still giving a dark, elegant look.
