DescriptionThe whole story▼
Knee impacts are among the most common in a fall, yet plenty of riding trousers and nearly all casual ones have no armour at the knee. The Knox Action Pro Knee Guards answer that with a stretch tube you pull up over the shin until the Micro-Lock Compact protector covers the kneecap.
They suit riders in jeans without pockets, trail and enduro days in lightweight pants, and eBike tours where a full armoured trouser would be overkill. The black finish disappears under any dark leg.
Key Features
- Micro-Lock Compact knee protector, CE Level 1 as per the Knox price list
- Sorona® Agile main fabric from DuPont with stretch, strength and stain resistance
- Mesh panel at the back of the knee to release heat
- Silicone-backed Knox elastic at thigh and calf opening
- Flex and Adapt slits in the armour so the shell follows the bent knee
- Unisex one size; Knox quotes 5 years guarantee on the registered Micro-Lock protector
Fit on the leg
A single unisex size covers everyone. Elastic with silicone grip sits at the thigh end and at the calf end, so the guard is held at two points and the protector cannot rotate away from the kneecap when you stand on the pegs. Knox gives no thigh or calf measurements, which makes trying them on worthwhile if your legs are outside the average range.
Because the guard lies directly on the leg, the kneecap stays covered while you kneel at the trailside or walk off the bike, something loose trouser armour does not always manage.
The knee protector
Inside sits a Micro-Lock Compact part, Knox's thin and supple armour that the manufacturer says locks on impact to absorb energy. The price list rates the guard CE Level 1. Under EN 1621-1, Level 1 permits more transmitted force than Level 2, in return for a slimmer and lighter pad. Knox claims the Compact range is up to 60 % lighter and thinner than its earlier protectors.
Fabric and climate
Sorona® Agile, the main fabric, combines 67 % elastomultiester and 33 % polyester; DuPont makes it partly from plant-based polymers. A stretch mesh of 88 % nylon and 12 % spandex sits in the hollow of the knee, the spot that sweats first in warm weather. The lining is 92 % polyamide with 8 % Lycra®, so the inside glides when you pull the tube up.
Riding use
Knox describes the Action Pro knee guard as a hybrid stretch guard for every type of riding, for adrenaline sports and for eBike riders. On the motorcycle it adds impact protection under trousers that lack knee pockets.
Looking after the guards
Hand cleaning is what Knox recommends for Micro-Lock armour, so wash the knee tubes by hand instead of in a machine and check the label of the sleeve before you start. Let them dry at room temperature, keep them away from heaters and avoid leaving them crushed under heavy kit, otherwise the pad can deform. A yearly check for cracks, worn elastic or a loose fit tells you when replacement is due. Combine them with the Action Pro Elbow Guards for the arms; both share fabric, silicone bands and armour family.
What you should know
A knee tube does not replace abrasion-resistant trousers; it softens a blow but will not survive a long slide on tarmac by itself. The rating is Level 1. Only one size is offered and no measurement chart is published. After a crash impact, Knox advises replacing the Micro-Lock protector, and in any case after five years. The guarantee applies once you register the product with Knox.
Colour
All black, with the copper-tone woven Knox band at thigh and calf. Under dark jeans or riding pants nothing shows, even when you sit and the fabric stretches over the knee. Mud and dust from an off-road day hardly register on black, and a quick hand wash is enough to refresh it.
