DescriptionThe whole story▼
Whether you ride the Yamaha YZF-R1 on track days, fast road routes, or a mix of both, the K-Tech DDS Closed Cartridge Kit gives you a genuinely transformative suspension upgrade that is as practical to live with as it is effective at the limit. Developed specifically for the stock forks of the RN32, RN49 and RN65 chassis, it replaces the factory cartridge with a precision-engineered system proven in British Superbike competition and on the Isle of Man TT course.
Key Features
- Direct Damping System (DDS) technology eliminates cavitation, delivering consistent damping performance lap after lap and mile after mile.
- 30-way independently adjustable compression and rebound damping lets you dial in exactly the response you need for your weight, riding style and road surface.
- 20 mm piston paired with 31 mm control valves maximises oil flow for precise, instantaneous damping control without vague mid-stroke feel.
- 18 mm preload adjustment range allows fine spring rate tuning to suit different spring choices or load conditions.
- 8 mm piston rod reduces system offset and improves fork linearity throughout the stroke.
- Increased travel compared to the original cartridge expands your suspension range and improves chassis composure over rough surfaces.
- Race-proven design validated in the British Superbike Championship and the Isle of Man TT.
Build Quality and Engineering
The patented DDS architecture uses asymmetric, independently operating damping circuits. Where a conventional cartridge blends compression and rebound hydraulics in a single flow path, the DDS keeps them separate. The result is a faster, more accurate response to sudden load changes — the kind you encounter when braking hard into a corner or when a road surface breaks up mid-bend. The spring force continuously stabilises the system, so the damping curve stays predictable even under sustained high-frequency inputs.
The 20 mm piston is larger than standard, which increases the volume of oil passing through the 31 mm control valves on each stroke. More flow means finer resolution at the adjuster — a single click produces a tangible, repeatable change rather than a vague shift in feel. The 8 mm piston rod geometry reduces internal misalignment forces that can cause stiction and uneven fork leg behaviour.
Everyday Usability and Value
K-Tech supplies three pairs of springs with the kit, meaning you can match spring rate to your actual riding weight and luggage load rather than working around a single factory compromise. The recommended baseline settings — 16 clicks compression, 18 clicks rebound, 10 mm preload — give you a fully functional starting point the moment the kit is installed, so you are not spending your first session hunting for a neutral balance. From there, the 30-way click range provides ample scope to refine without ever needing to disassemble the fork. For riders who want a track-grade suspension upgrade that also improves everyday road manners, the DDS Closed Cartridge Kit represents a highly cost-effective step up from OEM.
Installation must be carried out by an authorised K-Tech Service Centre. This is the only way to guarantee correct assembly, maximum safety and optimal performance from the system.
