Nobody Else Builds This
An inline four displacing 399 cc, with ram air and a rev ceiling of sixteen thousand. Kawasaki revived an idea that died out in Europe thirty years ago and did it at a price that makes no obvious commercial sense. The engine is the whole motorcycle and everyone who rides one says so.
A Grip That Never Rests
Because there is no torque below ten thousand revs to lean on, the ZX-4RR is ridden with the wrist working constantly: open, shut, open again, gear after gear. Over a season that puts more cycles through the throttle assembly than a large twin sees in three, and the assembly is where the switches live.
Where Kawasaki Put the Buttons
Inside the housing rather than on a separate bar clamp. It is compact and it means the starter and kill controls cannot be renewed on their own. Anyone replacing a tired switch on this bike is buying a throttle housing whether they wanted one or not.
Fifteen Thousand Revs Through the Bars
A small four spins fast and the frequency it sends into the handlebar is high and continuous rather than the low pulse of a twin. Clipped mouldings work loose under that in a way solid components do not, and a one-piece body with a bolted clamp is the straightforward answer.
A Recent Model
The ZX-4RR reached European dealers in 2024 and the parts around it are still appearing. Anything engineered for the bike rather than adapted from the Ninja 400, which is a different motorcycle electrically, is worth taking when it is available.
Black Anodised, Sealed Inside
One finish, applied as a surface conversion rather than a coating, with sealed switch elements within the machined body. On a bike ridden on the road during the week and at circuits on Sundays, the sealing matters in both settings.
