A Crossplane Twin
Yamaha gave the 689 cc parallel twin a 270 degree crank so that it fires unevenly, producing a character closer to a V-twin than to a conventional parallel. It made an inexpensive motorcycle genuinely enjoyable, which is why the engine has since appeared in six other models.
The Best-Selling Yamaha in Europe
For several years the MT-07 outsold everything else in the range. It was light, cheap, easy to ride and quick enough to stay interesting, and it converted a great many people to motorcycling who might otherwise have stopped after a year.
Where the Cost Was Saved
In the suspension and the small components. The frame and engine are good; the fork was famously soft and the switchgear is the cheapest-feeling thing the rider touches. Both are among the first things owners address.
A Naked Bike in All Weather
MT-07s commute. With no screen, rain reaches the controls at road speed and stays, and the sealed elements inside a one-piece milled housing are what determine whether the indicator still clicks properly after five winters.
Universal Clamp Pattern
The front brake is the second most common upgrade on this motorcycle after the suspension. The universal plate accepts either bolt geometry, so the switch does not have to be reconsidered when the brake is improved.
Seven Model Years
The fitment covers 2014 to 2020, the generation before the Euro 5 revision changed the lights, the bars and the electronics. The two look related and are not interchangeable electrically.
Black Anodised
A single finish, converted into the surface. Against the MT-07's dark plastics and exposed frame it belongs, and a knock dulls it rather than leaving a bright scar.
