Electronic Damping on a Roadster
The SP's Öhlins semi-active units read the inertial measurement unit and adjust continuously. On a naked bike with 165 hp and a short wheelbase, that keeps the chassis composed through transitions the standard suspension has to be set up for in advance.
A More Considered Cockpit
Yamaha gives the SP its own display graphics, a different seat and the R1M colour scheme. The switchgear is where that consideration stops, because it is the same part fitted to every other MT-10.
What the Left Hand Manages
Indicators, horn, beam and the navigation of a connected colour display with riding modes and intervention levels behind it. On a bike used daily those buttons accumulate operations faster than anything else on the motorcycle.
Sealed Against a Commute
Sealed switch elements inside a one-piece body. The MT-10 SP is expensive and it is still ridden in ordinary weather, and the absence of a moulded joint is what keeps the indicator feeling definite in year five.
Vibration From an Uneven Crank
The crossplane firing order sends a particular frequency into the bars. A machined housing clamped with a proper fastener handles that better than two mouldings held together by clips.
One Finish
Black anodised. Against the SP's silver bodywork and gold suspension it keeps the cockpit quiet, which on a motorcycle with this much else happening visually is the right decision.
Reversible Before a Sale
The standard cluster unbolts and refits at any point using the same connector. SP models hold their value and buyers ask about modifications, so keeping the original in a box is worth the shelf space.
What the Original Is
Two injection mouldings clipped around the handlebar. Competent, cheap to produce, and the buttons that sit across the joint between the halves are the first to lose their definition.
