An Open Circuit
That is all the electronics see, and they cannot distinguish it from a deployed stand or a broken wire. All three produce identical behaviour.
On a Panigale
The stand comes off with the lights, the mirrors and the plate in the first evening. Very few track-prepared superbikes keep one.
Record the Change
Anybody working on the motorcycle later will assume the interlock behaves as Ducati built it. A line in the book prevents a wasted afternoon.
A Sealed, Potted Unit
Water and salt reach the swingarm pivot more than almost anywhere else on the motorcycle, which is why the eliminator is closed rather than open.
A Repair, Not Only a Modification
A considerable proportion of these are fitted to motorcycles that still have their stand, by owners who have replaced the switch twice and decided against a third.
What the Side Stand Switch Does
It tells the controller whether the stand is down, and the controller uses that to cut the engine if a gear is selected with the stand still deployed. It is a genuinely useful safety interlock on a road motorcycle and the reason it exists is a very common and expensive mistake.
Getting Home Without One
A motorcycle with no side stand needs somewhere to lean or a paddock stand waiting at the other end. That sounds obvious until the first unplanned stop, and it is the practical reason most owners keep the standard parts within reach rather than at the back of a shelf.
