Cheap Enough to Convert
A six-year-old 765 R costs little enough that turning one into a dedicated track bike is a reasonable proposition, and quick enough that the result is competitive. That combination is why so many of these are now found with race bodywork and no lights.
Once the Lights Are Off
The indicator and horn controls become worse than useless: they occupy the positions the thumb searches. Removing them and spacing the remainder further apart is the entire design argument for a race cluster.
Standard Wiring Retained
Triumph's own connector and the factory ECU. Nothing upstream changes, no racing harness is required, and the motorcycle can still be read by a diagnostic tool, which matters when a track bike has to be returned to road specification.
A Pre-Euro 5 Machine
The fitment stops at 2019. The revision that followed changed the engine internals and the loom, and the later bikes take a different part. The two look closely related and are not interchangeable electrically.
Crash Economics
Over a season the question is not what a part costs once but how often it has to be bought. A milled housing scuffs where a moulded one cracks, and that shows up in the parts bill rather than in any single incident.
Three Finishes
Black, titanium and copper. On a race-prepared machine black is the usual choice, on the reasoning that a cockpit should give the eye nothing to catch at the wrong moment.
Reversible
The standard cluster unbolts and refits at any point, using the same connector. A track-converted 765 that has to be returned to road specification for sale can be, without any trace in the wiring.
