Four Cylinders Lying Down
BMW's inline four sits almost flat in the frame, which keeps the mass low and gives the motorcycle a wheelbase nobody expects from a sports bike.
Starting From Zero
An empty map means the motorcycle runs exactly as it did before, because every correction is nought. That is the safest possible starting point and it is where every session should begin.
Why Not Just Reflash
A remap of the original controller reaches ignition and the rider aids as well, and it is written into the motorcycle. This unit is narrower, reversible and belongs to the owner.
Wideband or Nothing
Mapping without measuring the mixture is guesswork with an engine as the test piece. A wideband sensor and a display cost less than most exhaust systems.
The Grid on Screen
Revs across, load down, a number in every cell. Anybody who has seen a mapping program will recognise it immediately and anybody who has not will need an evening.
The Fair Comparison
Against a full remap it is narrower and reversible. Against the preset module it is more capable and more work. It sits deliberately between the two.
If Something Feels Wrong
Write the empty map back and ride the same road. Ten minutes settles whether the unit is responsible, which is a diagnostic luxury a reflash does not give.
Who Should Buy It
An owner with a modified engine, a wideband sensor and some appetite for methodical work. That is a smaller group than the catalogue suggests and it is the honest answer.
When It Is Finished
When another session produces no change you can measure and none you can feel. Beyond that point the work is a hobby rather than an improvement, which is a perfectly good reason to continue.
