The first S1000R took a superbike and removed almost all of its bodywork, which left a small number of panels doing a great deal of work. The left side panel is one of them: it sits below the tank, ahead of the rider's knee, and it is one of the last painted surfaces on a motorcycle otherwise made of frame, engine and exhaust.

Sold Singly, and Why That Helps
Fullsix lists the two side panels as separate articles rather than as a set. On a naked motorcycle that is genuinely useful, because damage here is usually one-sided: a tip-over in a car park, a garage doorframe, a van strap left too tight over one flank.
It also lets a build happen in stages. Where both sides are wanted, order them together so they come from the same production run and the weave matches; where one panel is being replaced after damage, the other can stay standard for a while.

BMW S1000R, model years 2013 to 2016, left-hand side. The 2017-2020 facelift and the 2021 model both changed this area and take different parts.
Road Approval
Fullsix publishes neither an ABE nor an EC type-approval number for this part. Treat it as a replacement body panel and confirm the position for your own registration before road use.
A Panel at Knee Height on an Upright Bike
The riding position is what separates this motorcycle from the RR it is based on. Upright, with the knees further forward and less weight on the wrists, the rider's leg rests against this panel for most of a journey rather than only under braking.
That makes matt the sensible default: textile trousers against clear coat produce fine scratching over a season, and on a roadster the contact is more or less constant. Clear coat belongs on a machine that is ridden in measured doses and cleaned afterwards.
