DescriptionThe whole story▼
Hand guards are the one accessory on an adventure bike that earns its keep on every single ride. In November they keep the wind off your knuckles; in a rutted lane they keep a branch off your lever. Fullsix builds the DesertX pair in carbon, which sounds like a styling exercise until you feel how much less they buzz at motorway speed than the flexible originals.
Key Features
- Supplied as a pair, left and right, for the standard DesertX handlebar and lever arrangement
- Autoclave carbon shells that stay rigid in the airstream instead of fluttering and drumming
- Mounts to the original hand guard brackets — the set replaces the shells, not the bar-end and clamp hardware
- Four finishes, so the pair can be matched to the front mudguard or left raw for a working look
- Noticeably better weather protection than an open bar, without the visual bulk of a plastic rally guard
Stiffness Where It Matters
A hand guard has two failure modes. It can be too soft, in which case it deflects in the wind, resonates, and folds back onto your fingers the moment it meets anything solid. Or it can be too brittle, in which case it shatters and leaves a sharp edge next to your hand. The point of a properly cured carbon laminate is that it sits between the two: stiff enough to hold its shape in a 130 km/h airstream, tough enough to take a knock and spring back.
Because this is a pair, the two shells are laid up from mirrored moulds rather than one part fitted both ways round. That matters for the airflow: the left and right shells on the DesertX are not symmetrical.
Fitment and Compatibility
Ducati DesertX, 2022 to 2026, fitted to the original hand guard mounts. Check that your bike still has the factory brackets if a previous owner changed the levers or fitted bar risers.
Road Approval
Fullsix publishes no ABE or EC type-approval for the set. Hand guards can be treated differently from purely cosmetic covers depending on how they are mounted, so confirm the situation for your registration before road use.
Which Finish on the Handlebar
Hand guards sit in the rider's direct field of view for the entire ride, which makes this the one part where glare is a real consideration rather than a theoretical one. A high-gloss clear coat catches low winter sun and throws it back at you from just below eye level. Matt and satin do not, and that is why they dominate this particular part number.
Raw has a second argument on hand guards specifically. These are the parts most likely to meet a branch, a fence post or the ground, and a scuff in raw carbon is invisible from two metres while the same scuff through a clear coat is a white scar. If the DesertX is used as intended, raw is the pragmatic answer.
