DescriptionThe whole story▼
The standard Z900 silencer weighs 3.93 kg. This one weighs 1.84 kg. That is 53.2 % gone — more than half — and it is the largest single weight saving available on the bike for the money. The Akrapovic Slip-On Line (Carbon) S-K9SO6-HZC does it with a hand-crafted carbon fibre body and end cap, and it keeps EC and ECE type approval while doing so.
Key Features
- 1.84 kg against the standard 3.93 kg: 2.09 kg removed, a 53.2 % reduction at the silencer
- Compact shape drawn to suit a naked bike, so the muffler sits tight under the tail instead of hanging past it
- Hand-crafted carbon fibre body finished with an end cap in the same material
- 1.2 PS (0.9 kW) more power and 0.8 Nm more torque at 8,150 rpm, gains spread across the range rather than concentrated at one point
- EC and ECE type approved, and additionally EPA noise compliant
- Noise insert included for circuits with their own decibel limit
- Plug-and-play in about 30 minutes, no remapping needed
Construction and Material Quality
More than half the weight of a steel silencer disappears when the outer body is carbon fibre rather than steel, and on the Z900 that difference is unusually large because the standard unit is a heavy double-skinned item built to meet Euro 5 quietly and cheaply. Akrapovic lays the carbon by hand, and the end cap is the same material rather than a machined aluminium ring — a detail that matters on a naked bike, where the silencer is the first thing anyone looks at.
The shape is shorter and more compact than the standard part. On a machine with no bodywork behind the rider's seat, that changes the visual proportion of the whole rear of the bike.
Performance and Sound
The measured gains are modest and stated plainly: 111.9 PS becomes 113.0 PS, and torque goes from 92.0 Nm to 92.8 Nm with the peak gain of 0.8 Nm at 8,150 rpm. Akrapovic describes the improvement as spread across the range rather than a single peak, and on a road bike that is the more useful shape of gain.
What changes far more than the numbers is the noise. The in-line four gains depth and a hard edge on the overrun that the standard system suppresses entirely, and it remains inside the type-approved window.
Fitment and Compatibility
S-K9SO6-HZC is developed for the Kawasaki Z900 from model year 2020 to 2024, including the A2-restricted version, which shares the same exhaust. It is tested on EU-specification machines; fitment and measured performance on non-EU models can differ.
Two optional parts exist for this bike: a stainless steel header, E-K9R4, and a carbon fibre heat shield, P-HSK9SO1. Both are separate items and neither is needed to fit the slip-on. Fitting the optional header cancels the road approval of the silencer.
Road Approval
EC type approval and ECE type approval, with the certificates supplied and downloadable here. The system is additionally EPA noise compliant. Fitted on its own, without the optional header, the silencer is a legal road part in the European Union.
