DescriptionThe whole story▼
This header has a valve in it. That is unusual — most racing headers are a straight pipe and accept the low-rev flat spot that comes with removing a catalytic converter. Akrapovic built an exhaust valve into this one specifically to keep the boxer rideable below three thousand revs.
Key Features
- An exhaust valve for improved rideability at low revs — rare in a racing header
- 6.7 Nm more at 2,650 rpm, with peak torque rising from 132.2 to 136.6 Nm
- 3.5 PS more at 7,350 rpm, peak output rising to 126.6 PS
- 1.9 kg against the standard 4.3 kg: 2.4 kg and 55.8 per cent less
- Made from the finest titanium
- Fits the whole R 1250 family: GS, R, RS and RT
- No road approval — circuit use only
Why the Valve Matters on a Boxer
A BMW boxer makes its character between two and four thousand revs, and it is ridden there all day with luggage aboard. Strip the catalytic converter out of a header and the low-rev fuelling usually suffers — the engine gets flat exactly where the rider spends time.
The valve closes at low revs to keep gas velocity up, and opens as the engine climbs. The measured result is 6.7 Nm at 2,650 rpm, which is not what one normally sees from a track-only part.
Four Motorcycles, One Engine
BMW's 1,254 cc ShiftCam boxer runs in the GS adventure bike, the R roadster, the RS sport-tourer and the RT full-dress tourer. The header route is shared across all four, so one part covers the family.
Remapping Is Recommended
Akrapovic recommends rather than requires an ECU remap here, primarily to avoid a check engine light and to get the best throttle response. On a Euro 5+ machine with two lambda sensors the warning will otherwise appear.
What You Need Alongside It
This header does not work alone. It requires an Akrapovic slip-on, or the first-fit Akrapovic silencer BMW supplies as an accessory. For the R 1250 GS the matching slip-ons are S-B12SO23-HAAT and S-B12SO23-HAATBL; for the R and RS, S-B12SO22-HALAGTBL; for the RT, S-B12SO21-HALAGT.
Ninety Minutes on a Boxer
A boxer puts its cylinders out to the sides, which makes the exhaust ports the most accessible on any engine layout. Ninety minutes is nonetheless a workshop figure: the header runs under the engine, the sump guard has to come off on a GS, and on an RT the lower fairing is in the way.
The valve adds a step of its own — it needs its actuator connected, and that is not a job to rush.
Fitment and Compatibility
E-B12E4/1 covers the BMW R 1250 GS, R 1250 R, R 1250 RS and R 1250 RT from model year 2019 through 2024. Installation is quoted at 90 minutes.
Road Approval
None. This product does not meet emission compliance requirements for street or highway use.
