DescriptionThe whole story▼
There is a moment every touring rider knows. A blind left-hander on a country road, a tractor halfway across it, and behind you a top case, panniers, a passenger and a week's luggage. A K 1600 Grand America is a six-cylinder machine of considerable mass even before any of that is loaded, and all of it arrives at the front tyre when the lever is pulled. BMW has offered the Grand America since 2018, and Accossato lists a single front pad material for it: the AGPA57 in the Sintered (ST) compound.
Key Features
- Front brake pads for the BMW K 1600 Grand America, 2018 to 2026
- AGPA57ST, the AGPA57 plate carrying the Sintered (ST) material
- Accossato offers this front plate in this material alone for the Grand America
- Described by the maker as keeping an even grip level, cold or hot, and in the wet
- Two pads per box, which is one caliper's worth
- The front wheel runs two calipers, so a full change needs two boxes
- Rear pads for this tourer are catalogued as AGPA92, the DK007 disc is also listed
- No German ABE on record; supplied for track and competition use
Construction and Material Quality
Accossato builds one plate for each application and then decides its character with the friction material on the face. For the front of this tourer there is one choice, and it is the sintered one. The firm's claim for that material is about steadiness rather than drama: a high grip level that holds whether the pads are cold from an overnight stop or hot from a long series of applications, with rain making no difference. On a machine that may be ridden for a full day and then asked for everything at the end of it, a pad whose behaviour does not drift is worth more than one with a sharp initial bite. Each box contains the two pads a single caliper takes.
A Bend, a Tractor and Everything You Packed
Loading changes braking distances more than most riders allow for. A fully equipped K 1600 Grand America with a passenger aboard carries a great deal of mass high up and well back, and under hard braking that mass transfers forward and compresses the front suspension a long way before the tyre reaches its full grip. The practical answer is anticipation: a bigger gap, earlier vision into bends, and a first squeeze that is firm enough to load the front properly before the real effort goes in. It also helps to remember that the passenger is braking too, in the sense that their weight is arriving at your shoulders. Before a long trip, look at how much friction material is left on each pad, check that the discs are clean and unmarked, and confirm the fluid level, because a laden tourer is the wrong place to discover that any of these needed attention.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato's application data lists the AGPA57 for the front wheel of the K 1600 Grand America from 2018 to 2026. Two calipers grip that wheel, so a complete front renewal is two boxes and both sides are done at once. The rear of the same tourer takes the AGPA92, which is offered in a wider choice of materials, and the DK007 brake disc is catalogued for this machine as well.
Road Approval
We have no German ABE and no approval documentation for the AGPA57ST, so nothing in our hands covers it for road use. It is sold for track and competition riding. On a touring machine that spends its life on public roads, that limitation deserves a moment's thought before ordering.
