DescriptionThe whole story▼
Many Rebel 500 owners are new to motorcycling, and quite a few are new to spanners as well. Honda's low, easy-going bobber with its twin-cylinder engine draws riders who have only just passed their test, and for them a small drop in a car park can lead to the first repair they have ever tackled on their own. Changing a front brake lever is a good place to start: it needs only basic tools and some patience, and it teaches a lot about how the bike is put together. For the CMX 500 Rebel of 2017 to 2020, Accossato lists the AGD52, a black replacement brake lever in original form.
Key Features
- Replacement brake lever, original type, for the Honda CMX 500 Rebel
- Listed for 2017 to 2020, for the version with ABS
- Black, matching Accossato's listing for this bike
- Right-hand lever for the front brake
- An Accossato spare with value for money as the design goal
- Accossato says its production method gives more resistance after damage or a crash
- One lever per pack
- No German ABE or test mark on file; for racing and competition use
Construction and Material Quality
Much of the Rebel's appeal lies in its dark, pared-back look, and a replacement lever should not disturb it. Accossato makes the AGD52 as a spare of the original type, in black, so the right-hand end of the handlebar keeps the appearance Honda gave it. Value for money was the company's aim, and it states that the process used to make these levers improves their resistance after damage or a fall. Accossato says nothing more about the AGD52, and we do not fill the gap with guesswork.
A First Job for a New Home Mechanic
Read the brake section of the owner's manual first, then gather what you need: tools that fit the lever pivot, a clean rag, a little grease and a torch. Park the Rebel on level ground and lay a cloth over the tank, then take a photo of the lever area before you touch anything, so you can see later how everything sat. Undo the pivot and lift the old lever out, noting how its end meets the piston of the master cylinder. Clean the pivot and its bore, apply a thin film of grease, fit the AGD52 and tighten the pivot so that the lever moves freely but without wobble. Now check your work, and take your time over it. Squeeze the lever and feel for a firm pressure point, make sure it springs back fully when you let go, and ask someone to watch the tail light while you pull it. If the lever feels soft or spongy, stop and have a workshop look at the brake, because that points to the hydraulics rather than to the lever. Done carefully, the job gives a new owner confidence as well as a straight lever.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the AGD52 for the CMX 500 Rebel with ABS from 2017 to 2020, and it is the only original-type brake lever it names for this bike. It comes in black, the colour Accossato gives for this model. The AGD52 is not listed under any other motorcycle at Inter-Pace, which keeps the choice simple, but a quick comparison between the product photo and your own lever is still worthwhile. For the clutch side of the Rebel, Accossato offers its CNC lever ESH250 as a tuning option.
Road Approval
There are no approval documents for the AGD52 on file, so it carries no German ABE and no test mark; for that reason it is listed for racing and competition use.
