DescriptionThe whole story▼
Behind the belly pan of a faired Ducati sits the part of the brake system nobody ever looks at. The rear caliper of the SuperSport 939 S lives in the spray thrown off the back tyre, close enough to the chain to collect whatever comes off it, and it is asked to do very little for years at a time. Accossato lists the AGPA42 for that caliper across the 2017 to 2020 seasons, and article AGPA42OR carries the Organic material, the version the firm associates with a long service life and with going easy on the disc it works against.
Key Features
- Rear brake pads for the Ducati SuperSport 939 S, 2017 to 2020
- AGPA42OR: the AGPA42 shape in the Organic material
- Accossato credits the compound with long life and restrained disc wear
- One caliper at the rear, so a single box is the whole axle
- Two pads in the box, the pair that caliper closes on
- Front pads for the same machine: the AGPA177, identical years
- The AGPA42 shape is also pressed in ST and ZXC
- No German ABE on file; sold as a competition part
Construction and Material Quality
Two things are claimed for this version and both suit the back of a sports machine. It is meant to keep working over a long period instead of disappearing inside a couple of summers, and it is meant to be kind to the disc underneath it. That second promise is worth more at the rear than most riders realise, because a rear disc is thin, cheap to ruin and tedious to replace once the wheel and the hugger are involved. The AGPA42 carrier is common to every version of the article, so the part number decides the friction surface and nothing else about the job.
The Corner Nobody Looks At
A rear brake on a fully faired motorcycle leads a strange life. It does perhaps a tenth of the work of the front, spends the rest of the time being rained on, and is hidden well enough that a wearing pad can reach its backing before anyone notices. Chain lubricant flung sideways lands on the disc face, road film builds up on the caliper body, and the sliding hardware gradually stops sliding. None of it is dramatic and all of it is expensive once it has been ignored for three seasons.
Half an hour once a year sorts it out. Get the SuperSport 939 S on a stand, turn the wheel and look at both pads rather than the one that is easy to see, feel whether the caliper still moves freely, and clean the disc face with something that leaves nothing behind. Keep chain lubricant away from it in the first place by wiping the excess off before the bike is ridden. If a pad is going down noticeably faster than its partner, find out why before fitting a new set, because a fresh pair will simply repeat the pattern.
Fitment and Compatibility
The rear entry for this Ducati opens in 2017 and closes in 2020, matching the years Ducati offered the SuperSport 939 S. A single caliper works back there, which makes one box a complete change. The front of the same motorcycle is covered by the AGPA177, and as that end runs two calipers it needs two boxes when its turn comes. Accossato also catalogues the DKS036 disc for the model. Because pad shapes in this range are shared between machines, an order quoting AGPA42OR is the unambiguous one.
Road Approval
An ABE for the AGPA42OR has never reached us, and no German test certificate came with the article, so it is listed for racing and closed-course use.
Scope of Delivery
One box containing two AGPA42 pads in the Organic material, which is the complete set for the single rear caliper of this machine.
