DescriptionThe whole story▼
BMW's S 1000 R is the naked version of its superbike: a four-cylinder engine, a sharp chassis and a wide handlebar in place of clip-ons. On a Sunday morning it is at its happiest on narrow country roads, and those roads have a habit of ending in a farm gate or a missed turning that calls for a U-turn. With a steep camber and loose grit at the edge, that turn is where many riders have their slowest and most irritating fall. For the S 1000 R, Accossato's PF047 front axle sliders are listed from 2014 to 2018: a pair in black, made of aluminium and plastic.
Key Features
- Front axle sliders for the BMW S 1000 R, 2014 to 2018
- Accossato Front Fork Protection, code PF047
- Aluminium and plastic, finish black
- Pack of two, one per fork leg
- Spacers, screws and all mounting parts included, according to Accossato
- Meant to make first contact and help limit damage at the fork ends
- Pairs with the PP001 rear axle sliders and TP099 crash pads for this bike
- No German ABE; for racing and competition use
Construction and Material Quality
Accossato builds the PF047 from aluminium together with plastic and finishes it in black, a colour that goes with almost any paint scheme the S 1000 R has worn. A pack holds two, and the company states that spacers, screws and every other fitting part are in it as well. The manufacturer does not detail where the protectors sit on this bike, so we will not either. Their purpose is to take the first contact in a fall or a slide, in the hope that the fork and the front axle get away with less.
The U-Turn on a Narrow Lane
A U-turn on a narrow road asks for everything that fast riding does not train: very low speed, a slipping clutch, a touch of rear brake and a head turned right round towards the exit. On the S 1000 R, as on any bike, running wide at walking pace means dropping the front wheel into the gutter or onto the gravel at the edge, and that is when it falls. Choose the widest spot you can find, ideally where the road is flat and the surface clean, or use a driveway or a lay-by instead of the camber. Keep the revs slightly up and let the clutch do the work rather than the throttle. If the bike does go over, switch off the engine, check for leaking fuel and lift it with your legs, keeping your back straight. Before you carry on, look at the slider, the lever and the mirror on the side it fell. A slider that is deeply gouged or has worked loose should be replaced.
Fitment and Compatibility
The PF047 is on Accossato's list for the S 1000 R from 2014 to 2018. For the same bike the maker also lists the PP001 rear axle sliders for 2014 to 2018 and the TP099 crash pads for 2017 and 2018. When the pair is on, spin the front wheel and turn the bars from one end of their travel to the other to make sure nothing touches the calipers or the mudguard. Use the tightening values from BMW's manual and look at the screws again after the first ride.
Road Approval
We have no German ABE or test documents for the PF047. It is offered for circuit and competition use.
