DescriptionThe whole story▼
Supermotos are known for strong front brakes and long-travel forks, and the KTM 690 SMC R is no exception. The combination rewards a rider who knows how to use it and punishes one who grabs the lever, because the fork reacts to every squeeze. Riders who get the most from it learn to brake in two stages. For the 690 SMC R, Accossato lists the DK209, a floating front disc with a riveted friction ring, 320 mm in diameter and 3 mm thick, fixed through six holes of 6.5 mm on a 143 mm circle.

Construction and Material Quality
The DK209 is built in two parts. A friction ring, 3 mm thick and 320 mm across, is riveted to a carrier that bolts to the hub through six holes on a 143 mm circle around a 127 mm centre. The rivets hold the ring firmly enough to pass on the braking force, yet leave it free to shift very slightly as it heats and cools. Accossato puts particular emphasis on this clearance between carrier and ring and says its disc design is informed by racing experience in Superbike, Moto2 and Moto3.
Let the Fork Settle First
On a bike with long suspension travel, grabbing the front lever makes the fork dive abruptly, the weight lurches forward, and the front tyre is loaded unevenly at the very moment it has to deliver the most grip. Supermoto riders avoid this by braking in two stages: first a light squeeze that compresses the fork and settles the chassis, then, a fraction of a second later, the full pressure. The tyre is already loaded and pressed into the tarmac when the real stopping begins, and the bike stays calmer.
Practise this on the 690 SMC R in a safe place, from moderate speeds, and build up the pressure step by step over several sessions. The technique also treats the brake kindly: a progressive build-up gives disc and pads a moment to reach working temperature and spares them the shock of a sudden full clamp. What it cannot fix is a worn disc. If the lever pulses, if the ring shows cracks at the edge or near the rivets, or if the thickness has come down to the printed minimum, a new disc is due.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the DK209 in two version lines: the 690 SMC from 2008 to 2011 and the 690 SMC R with ABS from 2014 to 2026. The years 2012 and 2013 do not appear on the list. The disc replaces the single original front disc of the bike. Accossato also offers the EDB012 and ESA090 levers for the 690 SMC R. Tighten the disc bolts to KTM's figure and bed the disc in with new pads before riding hard.
Road Approval
The 690 SMC R is registered for the road, but the DK209 has no German ABE and no type approval on record. It belongs on closed circuits.
