DescriptionThe whole story▼
Between 2008 and 2015 Kawasaki's ZX-10R went through two generations, and from 2011 buyers could also order it with ABS. Both are litre-class superbikes that many owners still ride hard on fast roads and at track days. For their front wheel Accossato lists the DK235, a floating Elite disc with a 310 mm ring as thick as the original, mounted on a black carrier. Owners of the ABS model sometimes wonder whether a pulse at the lever is the system at work or a disc that has had its day.
Key Features
- Floating front brake disc for the Kawasaki ZX-10R, 2008 to 2015
- Also listed for the ABS version of 2011 to 2015
- Elite line, same thickness as the original: 5 mm
- 310 mm outside, 80 mm inside diameter
- Black carrier, Accossato logo on the rivets
- Minimum working thickness printed on the ring
- One disc per order; the ZX-10R carries two at the front
- No German ABE documented, for track use
Construction and Material Quality
Two parts, one purpose: the DK235 combines a braking ring of 310 mm with a black central carrier that has an 80 mm opening and bolts to the hub. They are joined by rivets that bear Accossato's logo, the mark of its Elite line. The ring keeps the 5 mm thickness of the Kawasaki original, so the pads meet it at the width they were designed for. Accossato says the play between carrier and ring was defined through detailed study, and it names Superbike racing and the Moto2 and Moto3 grids as the places where its knowledge of discs was earned.
ABS at Work or a Tired Disc?
When the ABS of a ZX-10R steps in, the lever answers with a rapid, hard pulsing, and only when a wheel is close to locking: on a slippery patch, over a painted line in the wet, in a genuine emergency stop. A distorted disc feels different. It sends a slower, rhythmic kick through the lever that follows the rotation of the wheel, it appears in every stop from a certain speed, and it is there on dry, clean tarmac under moderate pressure. Bikes without ABS show the same symptom, of course.
To find the cause, put the ZX-10R on a front paddock stand, turn the wheel by hand and watch the gap between pad and disc, or better still set a dial gauge against the braking ring. Uneven deposits of pad material can imitate a warped disc, and a careful clean followed by a fresh bedding-in sometimes cures them. If the run-out stays, or the ring is close to the thickness printed on it, a new disc is the honest answer. Change the pads at the same time, since they have taken on the uneven shape of the old ring.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the DK235 for the ZX-10R built from 2008 to 2015 and names the ABS model of 2011 to 2015 in a separate line. For the 2016 to 2021 generation, which uses a larger disc, Accossato has the DKS041 instead. The DK235 takes the place of one original front disc; since the ZX-10R has two, a complete change calls for two, and the price shown is per disc. Tighten the disc bolts to Kawasaki's specification.
Road Approval
Accossato's DK235 has no German ABE and no documented type approval, so its place is the racetrack.
