DescriptionThe whole story▼
The Kawasaki GTR 1400 is a heavy four-cylinder sports tourer with shaft drive, built to cover great distances at motorway pace, and long motorway journeys end at a toll booth or in a traffic jam more often than on a mountain pass. That pattern hides a risk for its front discs. For the GTR 1400 of 2007 to 2020, Accossato lists the DK235, an Elite-line floating disc with a black carrier and the Accossato logo on its rivets, 310 mm across and 5 mm thick.
Key Features
- Floating front disc for the Kawasaki GTR 1400, 2007 to 2020
- Also listed for the ABS models and the GTR 1400 Concours
- Elite line: thickness equal to the original disc, logo on the rivets
- 310 mm outer diameter, 80 mm inner diameter, 5 mm thickness
- Black carrier
- Price per disc; the GTR 1400 has two front discs
- No German ABE documented; track use
Construction and Material Quality
Elite is what Accossato calls a line of floating discs that keep the thickness of the original equipment disc and carry the company logo on every rivet. On the DK235, those rivets join a 310 mm friction ring to a black carrier with an 80 mm centre. The ring is given a little freedom of movement, so heat can expand it without bending the carrier. Accossato, based today in Villastellone near Turin, says the clearance between carrier and ring was developed with great care, drawing on its racing experience in Superbike, Moto2 and Moto3.
Toll Booths and Pad Imprints
The scene is familiar to anyone who tours on motorways. After a long stretch at speed, the GTR 1400 slows hard for a toll plaza or the tail of a traffic jam. The discs are hot. The bike comes to a stop and the rider holds it there with the front brake, pads clamped on the same spot of each disc, for a minute or more. Hot pad material can transfer to the disc at that spot and leave an imprint. From then on the disc is no longer uniform: at every turn the pads meet a patch that grips differently, and after a while the rider feels a pulse in the lever that is often blamed on a warped disc.
The habit that avoids it is simple. After a hard stop from high speed, hold the bike on the rear brake or let it roll forward slowly instead of clamping the front lever. In a long queue, let the bike creep along in first gear. When the lever does start to pulse, look at the discs before replacing them: dark patches the size of a pad point to imprints, which sometimes fade after a series of firm stops with fresh pads. If they persist, or if the thickness is close to the printed minimum, new discs are the answer. The GTR 1400 carries two, and both should be changed at the same time.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the DK235 for the Kawasaki GTR 1400 from 2007 to 2020: the standard bike of 2007 to 2017, the ABS versions of 2015 to 2020 and the GTR 1400 Concours of 2007 to 2017. Each DK235 replaces one original front disc, and the bike has two, so a full change means ordering a second one. Accossato also lists the EDF088 and ESH088 levers for this model.
Road Approval
The DK235 carries no German ABE, and there is no type approval on file. We therefore sell it for track use, even though the GTR 1400 itself is a touring motorcycle.
Scope of Delivery
One DK235 floating disc with black carrier; the second front disc is a separate order.
