DescriptionThe whole story▼
The Ducati Panigale 899 was the middleweight twin of the Panigale family, a sports bike that many owners ride to work during the week and take to a circuit at the weekend. Both kinds of use load the front brake heavily, and after a few seasons one of the first things a rider notices is a lever that no longer feels smooth. For the Panigale 899 of 2014 and 2015, Accossato makes the DK053, a floating front disc on a black carrier that the company describes as interchangeable with the original equipment disc.
Key Features
- Floating front brake disc for the Ducati Panigale 899, model years 2014 and 2015
- Interchangeable with the original equipment disc, according to Accossato
- Outer diameter 320 mm, inner diameter 72 mm, thickness 4.5 mm
- Friction ring riveted to a black carrier
- Minimum working thickness printed on the disc
- Sold as one disc; the 899 has two at the front
- No German ABE documented; intended for track use
Construction and Material Quality
A floating disc is two parts working as one. The outer friction ring, which the pads clamp, is joined to a black central carrier by rivets that allow a small amount of movement, so the ring can grow with heat and centre itself between the pads without dragging the carrier out of shape. Accossato says it has studied the tolerances and the clearance between these two parts in depth, and it links its know-how to racing in Superbike, Moto2 and Moto3. On the DK053 the ring measures 320 mm across, the centre 72 mm, and the ring is 4.5 mm thick. The lowest thickness at which the disc may still be used is printed on it.
When the Lever Starts to Pulse
A pulsing front brake lever is one of the most common complaints on sports bikes that have covered a few seasons. You squeeze the lever with steady pressure and feel it push back in a rhythm that follows the turning wheel, and the front of the bike may shudder slightly at the same time. Riders tend to call the disc warped, but the cause varies. Sometimes the ring really runs out of true after it has been overheated or knocked. More often its thickness has become uneven, because pad material has been laid down in patches or the ring has worn more in some places than in others.
A workshop can tell the two apart. With the Panigale 899 on a front stand, a dial gauge held against the ring shows any sideways runout as the wheel turns, and a micrometer used at several points reveals differences in thickness. Because a motorcycle disc is thin, the answer to either fault is usually a replacement rather than machining. If a disc is out of true or already close to the minimum printed on it, renew both front discs, fit fresh pads, clean the rings with brake cleaner and bed them in with a series of progressively firmer stops so that the pad material is laid down evenly from the start.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the DK053 for the Ducati Panigale 899 of 2014 and 2015. The Panigale 899 carries two discs at the front and the price here is for a single disc, so a complete change means ordering two. For the same bike Accossato also offers the DKS035, an Elite-line front disc with a thicker ring and logo rivets.
Road Approval
No German ABE and no type approval are documented for the DK053. It is offered for use on closed circuits and in competition.
Scope of Delivery
