DescriptionThe whole story▼
Rain changes the life of a rear brake. Spray from the road carries water and fine grit onto the disc, and on a Kawasaki Ninja 500 ridden to work through the colder months, the pads grind that mixture into the braking surface day after day. Accossato's DK271 replaces the rear disc of the Ninja 500 and the Ninja 500 SE from 2024 to 2026. It is a fixed disc made in one piece of steel, 220 mm in diameter and 5 mm thick, with the minimum thickness printed on it.
Key Features
- Fixed rear disc for the Kawasaki Ninja 500 and Ninja 500 SE, 2024 to 2026
- Steel, one piece, from Accossato's fixed off-road discs
- 220 mm outer diameter and 100 mm inner diameter
- 5 mm thick, three 10.5 mm mounting holes on a 120 mm circle
- Interchangeable with the original equipment disc
- Minimum thickness printed on the disc
- No German ABE on file; for use on the track
Construction and Material Quality
Accossato makes the DK271 as a steel disc without rivets or a separate carrier: the ring that meets the pads and the flange that bolts to the wheel are one part. It is the construction Accossato uses for its fixed off-road discs, and it is also the common choice at the rear of road bikes. Like most steel discs, it can show a thin film of surface rust after a wet night, which the first few applications of the brake wipe away. The disc measures 220 mm by 100 mm and is 5 mm thick; its three 10.5 mm holes sit on a 120 mm circle, and Accossato states that it fits in place of the original.
Wet Commutes
In the rain, many riders use the rear brake more than usual. They trust the front less on a greasy surface, so the rear pads work harder, and the grit in the spray acts like fine abrasive paper between pad and disc. A winter of commuting on a Ninja 500 leaves a dull surface with fine rings, and sometimes a deeper groove where a hard particle lodged in a pad.
A few habits keep this in check. Rinse the wheels with clean water after rides on salted or muddy roads, and let the bike dry before covering it. Keep chain lube and cleaning sprays away from the disc and pads; if some lands there, clean the disc with brake cleaner and consider new pads, since contaminated pads rarely recover. Look at the rear pads every few weeks in winter, because wet grit wears them far faster than dry roads do. Once the disc has reached the minimum printed on it, or shows grooves deep enough to feel, replace it, ideally together with the pads.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the DK271 for both versions of the Ninja 500 from 2024 to 2026, the standard bike and the SE. No Accossato front disc is listed for this model. Refit the rear wheel of the Ninja 500 with the chain correctly adjusted, and tighten the disc bolts to Kawasaki's specification.
Road Approval
We know of no German ABE and no type approval for the DK271, so it is supplied for racing and circuit use.
