DescriptionThe whole story▼
Plenty of riders have taken their first laps of a circuit aboard a Kawasaki Ninja 300, on track days and in club series where a light twin rewards smooth lines more than brute force. On track the rear brake is used sparingly, but it still has a job, and a rear disc worn thin by years on the road is not the part to begin a season with. Accossato's DK271 is a fixed steel rear disc for the Ninja 300, listed from 2013 to 2018, measuring 220 mm across with a thickness of 5 mm.
Key Features
- Fixed steel rear disc for the Kawasaki Ninja 300, 2013 to 2018
- One-piece disc from Accossato's off-road range
- 220 mm diameter, 100 mm inner diameter, 5 mm thickness
- Three holes of 10.5 mm on a 120 mm circle
- Swaps directly for the original equipment disc
- Printed minimum thickness for quick wear checks
- For circuit and competition use; no German ABE documented
Construction and Material Quality
The DK271 is made from steel, as Accossato states, and produced as a single part, with the mounting face and the braking surface in one. Accossato's fixed off-road discs follow this pattern, and at the back of a Ninja 300, where temperatures stay moderate even on a circuit, a one-piece disc does its work without the extra parts of a floating design. The company relates its disc design to what it learnt in the Moto3 and Moto2 classes and in Superbike racing. The dimensions are 220 mm outside and 100 mm inside, with three 10.5 mm holes on a 120 mm hole circle, and the disc can be swapped for the Kawasaki original.
What the Rear Brake Does on Track
On a small-capacity sports bike, most corners are taken with high entry speed and little braking, and the front brake does nearly all of what braking there is. The rear works in a quieter role. A light touch on the pedal as you close the throttle keeps the chassis from pitching forward so sharply, and on the way into a slow corner it can help the Ninja 300 hold a tighter line. Some riders also use a whisper of rear brake to calm the front wheel as it lifts out of a hairpin. None of this needs force, but it needs a brake that responds in the same way lap after lap.
In the paddock, look at the rear disc between sessions as you would at tyre pressures. Check that the bolts are tight, that no pad material has glazed onto the surface and that there are no cracks around the holes. Measure the thickness at the start of each season and compare it with the minimum printed on the disc. Accossato warns that a disc worn past its limit may fail when it is heavily loaded, and a circuit loads it on every lap.
Fitment and Compatibility
The Ninja 300 appears on Accossato's list from 2013 to 2018, with the SE version listed from 2013 to 2016; both take this rear disc. Accossato does not list a front disc for the Ninja 300. When fitting, tighten the bolts to Kawasaki's specification, and while the rear wheel is out, check its bearings and the condition of the rim.
Road Approval
For this disc no German ABE is documented, and there is no type approval on record, so it is sold for the track and for racing.
